While most people notice some residual effects after something shocking or scary happens, they return to normal within a few weeks. They may experience some lasting fear or anxiety but can function well in daily life and handle their responsibilities.

However, not everyone who goes through a traumatic event will bounce back. These people experience lasting or worsening symptoms as time passes. As a result, they have trouble taking care of things from work to school to their families. Over time they may develop post-traumatic stress disorder, a serious mental health condition.

If you’re living with PTSD, you might feel like your symptoms control your life. You may struggle to go certain places or do certain things because of the overwhelming fear and anxiety. Perhaps you find yourself wondering, “Will PTSD ever go away?”

When left untreated, post-traumatic stress disorder only worsens with time. However, effective PTSD treatment can help you return to a fulfilling life free from the weight of trauma’s impact on your life. How can you find help for your condition?

What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental health disorder that may develop after a person experiences a traumatic event. These include experiencing or witnessing an assault, accident, abuse, neglect, active combat, natural disasters, sudden loss of a loved one, or other serious and stressful events.

An estimated 7 or 8 out of 100 people will experience post-traumatic stress disorder at some point in their lives.1 Studies show that more women develop PTSD than men. Additionally, certain biological factors may also affect the likelihood of someone developing the condition.

Signs of PTSD

Signs of post-traumatic stress disorder typically show within three months of the traumatic event but occasionally occur later. They must last for at least one month and disrupt aspects of daily life to meet the criteria for PTSD.2 Symptoms are categorized into four groups:

Re-experiencing Symptoms

  • Flashbacks
  • Recurrent and intrusive dreams or memories of the event
  • Distressing thoughts

Avoidance Symptoms

  • Avoiding places, people, objects, or events that are reminders of the traumatic experience
  • Trying not to think about or feel feelings related to the event

Arousal and Reactivity Symptoms

  • Startling easily
  • Feeling on edge, nervous, guarded, or tense
  • Feeling frustrated, irritable, or having angry outbursts
  • Having troubles concentrating
  • Having sleeping problems (i.e., trouble falling asleep or staying asleep)

Cognition and Mood Symptoms

  • Having negative thoughts about oneself or the world
  • Experiencing distorted thoughts about the event that causes guilt, shame, or self-blame
  • Ongoing and overwhelming negative emotions like fear, anxiety, and anger
  • Losing interest in activities or hobbies
  • Withdrawing from friends, family, and loved ones
  • Feeling isolated and alone
